An ongoing art series divided into『 Travel & Arrival 』

“ Art, for Selena Xin Jin, is a silent conversation between the self and the cosmos—a way to map invisible emotions and stitch together fractured identities. Her work dissolves borders, inviting viewers into meditative realms where personal experiences collide with universal truths, urging a reckoning with what it means to belong nowhere and everywhere.”

Everyone is living in their own universe,

Searching and discovering something new about themselves every second.

As an introvert, I found myself very sensitive when it comes to feelings.

I enjoyed the time that I could just soak in my own universe of emotions.

Obstructing reality, feeling the world through my own sensational memories.

I use the galaxy as the "transmitter" that explains my stories to the world,

while I TRAVEL through my own universe.

『 TRAVEL 』

Every soul belongs to its own planet,

Every planet has its own colour, texture, character and structure.

I circle around my planet and others,

Trying to figure out myself while exploring their worlds.

I am ARRIVING to their “planet” by listening to their personal stories

Feeling the emotions from people around me,

then use my own understanding to process those precious stories.

Artist Statement

Born in China and raised across five countries, my multicultural upbringing instilled in me a profound reverence for the diverse stories and souls that shape our world. As someone who has often struggled to articulate emotions verbally, I discovered art as my most authentic language. Trained initially in still life sketching and later in costume design, I honed a meticulous eye for texture and narrative, eventually transitioning to painting as my primary medium of emotional expression.

My work revolves around acrylic on canvas, layered with natural materials like sand and stones—elements that serve as tactile bridges between the human experience and the cosmic unknown. Through these mediums, I explore themes of identity, connection, and the universal search for belonging, weaving personal and collective journeys into visual form.

Central to my practice is the ongoing series GALAXY RESEARCH LAB (2019–present), a project born from my fascination with the metaphorical parallels between interstellar exploration and human emotion. Divided into two chapters, “Travel” and “Arrival”, the series invites viewers into a meditative dialogue with their inner worlds:

  • “Travel” captures the solitary act of self-discovery, where the galaxy becomes a “transmitter” for my own emotional universe. Through surreal landscapes and fragmented realities, I confront isolation, introspection, and the raw vulnerability of navigating one’s psyche.

  • “Arrival” shifts focus to connection, depicting souls as celestial bodies—each a unique planet with its own color, texture, and rhythm. Here, I explore empathy as a gravitational force, urging viewers to orbit others’ stories and find resonance in shared fragility.

The pandemic-era extension of this series, “Self-Reflecting & Healing”, emerged from a period of forced stillness. During global lockdowns, I confronted buried fears and paradoxically deepened bonds through silent video calls and unspoken exchanges with friends. This body of work translates those moments into minimalist compositions, where muted tones and intimate scales evoke the quiet power of introspection and unexpected kinship.

My art has been exhibited internationally, including shows in Los Angeles, Paris, Beijing, and New York, and amplified through collaborations with platforms like Xiaohongshu and Coffee Shops, where viral campaigns sparked dialogues between art and everyday spaces.

Ultimately, I aim to create meditative portals where viewers reconnect with their own emotional archives. By blending cosmic symbolism with deeply personal narratives, I seek to remind us that while our journeys are singular, our struggles and joys are constellations—interconnected, enduring, and luminous.

Through every brushstroke and embedded stone, I ask: What unspoken truths might we discover when we dare to travel inward—and what universes might we build when we finally arrive?
